Serbia's Sloga trade union has demanded an inspection to check the living conditions of Chinese workers who came to Serbia to build the Linglong plant.
A tire plant for Chinese tire manufacturer Linglong is under construction in Zrenyanging City, and the union expresses strong concerns about the unsanitary living conditions of Chinese workers. “The conditions in which workers live are unworthy of human beings and run counter to the European values that we are trying to promote in this country,” the union said in a press release.
“These are living conditions suitable for the Middle Ages and concentration camps and should be a thing of the past. Such an attitude towards workers is unacceptable, says the trade union. “The Serbian government tolerates labor and human rights violations for its own benefit and vested interests.”
As Sloga states, "If we do not now protest against such inhuman and degrading treatment of Chinese workers in Zrenjanin, the day will come when Serb workers will share their fate."
Earlier, local environmentalists complained about the ambitious project of the Linglong tire plant in Serbia, in which the Chinese manufacturer is investing about 800 million euros. They question the legality of the building permit received from the local authorities.
