Hankook Tire and SK Planet will teach AI to identify road hazards

Leading South Korean tire manufacturer Hankook Tire & Technology has teamed up with software developer SK Planet. The partners will jointly develop an artificial intelligence solution that will detect road hazards by analyzing noise models collected from moving vehicles.

Based on noise data collected from tire testing facilities, SK Planet will develop a hazard detection solution using AI and its deep learning capabilities, Hankook Tire explains.

The solution, being developed by Hankook and SK Planet, will be able to detect hazards such as ice, snow and heavy rain so that local road services can respond to problems in a timely manner.

Hankook Tire emphasizes the importance of collecting large amounts of noise data so that AI can learn patterns of noise generation based on road conditions.

In areas of South Korea where snow and ice are frequent, salt water spray systems are built into the road infrastructure. Salt water lowers the freezing point, which helps to get rid of snow or ice crust.
