Hankook Tire is working with Korean data collection and testing company SK Planet to develop a monitoring system that identifies potential traffic risks in real time.
According to Hankook, the new so-called “Road Risk Detection Solution” uses artificial intelligence (AI) and “deep learning” technology to analyze the road noise of passing vehicles and identify potential risks.
The platform, Hankook says, will be able to identify risks - snow, rain, snow, ice, accidents or other potential hazards - and report them to the appropriate transport authorities.
To use artificial intelligence effectively, Hankook will provide SK Planet with a wide range of different noise data; this will help improve the accuracy of the technology. Data will be collected at Hankook's test tracks in Geumsan, South Korea, and Ivalo, Finland.
Upon completion of the development, the system is expected to be adapted and implemented to monitor and control traffic in winter.
"The new Hankook Tire partnership will further drive the automotive industry," said Klaus Krause, head of Hankook's European Research and Development Center.
