Sumitomo tests remote tire monitoring system

The service will be launched in three Japanese prefectures.

Sumitomo has begun testing a new service in Japan to remotely monitor tire pressure and temperature. At this stage, the company intends to assess the overall efficiency of the service, which is designed to improve road safety, as well as help fleets manage their tire economy and reduce transport downtime.

The new solution from Sumitomo allows data collected by the TPMS sensors in the tires to be collected from anywhere in the world using the cloud service, and the company is reminded that maintaining the correct tire pressure has a positive effect on both safety and fuel efficiency.

The tests will use 30 vehicles from the car leasing Shin-Idemitsu fleet and an additional 500 vehicles from IDEX Auto Japan (part of Shin-Idemitsu), which rents them. The tests will be carried out in three prefectures of the Kyushu region - Fukuoka, Miyazaki and Kagoshima.

Sumitomo notes that it intends to identify ways to improve the efficiency and convenience of the service by providing users with the opportunity to obtain tire data through a dedicated website. The company also adds that monitoring the condition of tires at the moment is becoming even more important, since now the segment of self-driving cars is rapidly developing.
