Nexen Tire has developed AI and data-driven technology to reduce tire noise.
The Korean manufacturer says the "forecasting system" was developed as part of a two-year research program for noise, vibration and severity. It was attended by long-term partners of Nexen - the automaker Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group and Inha Research University.
As part of the project, the tire manufacturer installed an anechoic chamber containing dozens of microphone sensors to measure noise, analyze the noise generated by passing traffic and detect the causes of noise from vehicle propulsion systems.
The researchers used the collected data and deep learning algorithms based on tire tread patterns and noise factors to create an AI system to optimize tires and reduce the noise of passing vehicles. Based on these results and using proprietary imaging technology, Nexen said it was able to create new solutions that significantly reduced tire noise.
According to Nexen, the company's snow braking, aquaplaning and wet driving tests showed a 1 dB and 3 dB reduction in vehicle interior and exterior noise, respectively.
Nexen expects the new low-noise tire technology to be used in future Hyundai-Kia vehicles. The tire manufacturer will also offer its technology to other automakers.
