Pirelli develops tires for Rivian electric vehicles

American startup Rivian Automotive will use specially designed versions of Pirelli Scorpion light truck tires as the original equipment of its R1T and R1S SUVs.

Pirelli and Rivian have jointly developed 20-, 21- and 22-inch versions of the Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season, Scorpion Zero All Season and Scorpion All Terrain tires to meet Rivian's electric vehicle specifications. The homologated tires have received RIV and Elect markings.

The release of the four-door and five-seat R1T pickup truck, capable of accelerating from 0 to 96 km / h and traveling about 640 km on a single charge, is scheduled for June 2021, and then, in August, the company will release a second novelty - the R1S SUV.

The R1T is fitted with 275 / 55R21 Scorpion Verde All Season tires, which Pirelli describes as an all-season eco-friendly touring model for pickups, crossovers and SUVs. To meet Rivian's requirements, Pirelli engineers selected a silica-infused compound for the tires. In combination with the tread pattern configuration, this allows for optimal pressure distribution in the contact patch, reducing rolling resistance and providing stable traction all year round, even on light snow.

In addition, for Rivian electric vehicles, Pirelli engineers have developed an exclusive version of the Scorpion Zero All Season tire for strong grip on snow, and a version of the Scorpion All Terrain Plus tires in size 275 / 65R20 for the R1T and R1S models.
