India plans to introduce a tire rating system in the country

The Energy Efficiency Authority of India (BEE), Bureau of Standards of India (BIS), Ministry of Roads and Highways (MoRTH), and vehicle testing agencies plan to introduce a rating system in the country based on rolling resistance and wet grip performance.

The rolling resistance rating of a tire indicates its fuel consumption, while the wet grip rating indicates the tire's safety when braking on wet roads. Appropriate labeling will make it easier for consumers to choose tires, experts say.

However, the introduction of a tire rating system in India may face a number of difficulties - at least the fact that there are not enough testing centers in the country. To date, wet adhesion tests can only be carried out on the basis of ICAT Manesar, while the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), which tests cars and components, is only creating the necessary proving ground. In addition, there is currently no base for testing in India tires for rolling resistance.

When talking about the need to introduce their own rating and labeling system, Indian authorities refer to the successful experience of the European Union, Japan and South Korea, where the existing labeling effectively informs consumers about the key characteristics of tires.
