Pirelli and BMW will protect Indonesia's wildlife

Pirelli and BMW have joined BirdLife International on a three-year project to promote sustainable natural rubber production without harming Indonesia's forests.

BirdLife International is an international organization for the protection of birds and the preservation of their habitat, which unites more than 120 non-governmental nature conservation organizations. Working with BirdLife International, the automotive companies will support a project that protects Indonesia's natural forest ecosystem and prevents the extinction of endangered animal and bird species.

The project will implement several initiatives in the tropical rainforest of Sumatra to support farmers and prevent the deforestation of the wild jungle. A number of activities will be carried out in line with the goals of the GPSNR Global Platform, which advocates for the development of a sustainable and sustainable natural rubber business.

The project will assess biodiversity conservation and soil fertility, and smallholder farmers will receive training in best practices for growing rubber trees and managing plantations to maintain productivity. A Cooperative of Natural Rubber Producers will also be created, which will allow the direct supply of natural rubber from farmers to processing plants in the region.

“Together with the BMW Group, we intend to take an active part in a project that aims to ensure a sustainable and environmentally responsible natural rubber industry, as we believe that community, biodiversity and business must grow, supporting each other and creating shared socio-ecological value” Said Giovanni Tronchetti Provera, Pirelli's Senior Vice President for Sustainability and Future Mobility.

“Our goal is to become a leader in sustainability and actively take responsibility within our supply chains. In the fight against climate change, we are implementing innovative measures to support biodiversity and conserve rainforests, ”said Andreas Wendt, Member of the Board of Purchasing, BMW. “Our project in Indonesia will help people and local economies work in greater harmony with nature. At the same time, he will also support local communities by increasing the professionalism of their natural rubber growing practices. ”
