Continental plans to close U.S. plant

Continental plans to close its Fletcher, North Carolina, USA plant where it manufactures hydraulic braking systems.

At the moment, the company has 650 jobs.

Continental says the North Carolina plant has "failed to attract new customers in recent years." The plant can be sold to another owner, and Conti is considering the possibility of transferring some of the jobs to other North American enterprises.

The plant will be closed as part of a global restructuring program that will affect up to 20,000 Conti jobs around the world.

Continental also said that discussions will soon begin to close the plant in Newport News, Virginia, where about 740 people make hydraulic components for engines.
