French government ready to invest in Bridgestone tire plant

The French government is ready to invest with Bridgestone in rescuing a French plant that the Japanese tire maker plans to close, Industry Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher said Monday.

The French government is considering various options for preserving the Bethune plant in northern France. The company employs 863 people and the government is looking for ways to keep all jobs.

“If we could reach an agreement with Bridgestone, we would invest [in the plant],” Industry Minister Agnes Pannier-Runaker told LCP TV. “We tell Bridgestone that it is necessary to consider all scenarios and not exclude them from the principle, and even ready to invest in order to give the plant a future.”

According to her, the government will meet with representatives of Bridgestone in the near future. The form of potential investments has not yet been announced.
