Victory in the big summer tests Auto Bild went to Continental tires

Mar 15, 2017

Auto Bild magazine presented the results of the final part of its large tests of summer tires in 2017, until the finals of which only 20 tires out of 52 got after the preliminary selection.

In the second stage, 225/50 R17 tires were fitted to the BMW 320d and participated in tests that were not in the first stage: aquaplaning, rolling resistance, mileage and noise level.

The victory in the end went to the leader of the previous stage - the tires Continental PremiumContact 6.

Continental tires have become one of six participants, rated as "exemplary". The experts of the publication noted that Continental PremiumContact 6 provide "the best quality of driving on wet and dry surfaces, dynamic handling and precise entry into the turn, short stopping distance and excellent mileage." Thanks to the last item, the model also received the title of 'Eco-champion' tests, and the only negative PremiumContact 6, which could be called Auto Bild experts, is a high price.

Three more tires - Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2, Falken Azenis FK510 and Pirelli Cinturato P7 Blue - shared the second place among themselves. All of them showed well-balanced performance, but the weak point of the Dunlop and Falken tires was not enough low rolling resistance, and the Pirelli tires slightly worse than the rest showed themselves in the tests for aquaplaning. The same problem was found in the Hankook Ventus PrimeĀ³ model, which took the third place (or the fifth, depending on how to count) the place. The Hankook tires showed well-balanced handling and braking performance on dry and wet roads, low noise, high efficiency and attractive price.

All these tires, like the model Fulda SportControl 2, were rated 'exemplary'.

Two more tires, Bridgestone Turanza T001 Evo and Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3, according to the results of the tests became the owners of the evaluation 'good'. Bridgestone tires showed good handling and safety on the wet road, as well as high accuracy of the turn on the dry surface, but the mileage was at an insufficient level. Goodyear tires also acted as a well-balanced product, providing safety on wet and dry roads, high resistance to aquaplaning and a short braking distance on a dry road.

A dozen more tires were rated "satisfactory": they are models of Michelin Primacy 3 and Uniroyal RainSport 3, Vredestein Ultrac Satin, Sava Intensa UHP 2, Toyo Proxes Sport, Maxxis Premitra HP5, Avon ZV7, Nokian zLine, Cooper Zeon CS8 and Nova Force from Leao , And this tire, as noted by Auto Bild, pleasantly surprised by the short braking distance, low noise level and low price. As weaknesses of the Chinese tire experts called the slow response of steering and not enough powerful coupling on a wet and dry road, and also run. However, in the comparative tests, the Leao tires were still able to perform better than the Yokohama Advan Fleva V701, which finished in the penultimate place and received a rating of 'conditionally recommended'. Auto Bild specialists noted their good braking on wet and dry roads, combined, however, with low resistance to aquaplaning, slow steering response and insufficient grip on the wet road.

The outsider of the test was the Kumho Ecsta HS51 tire, rated Auto Bild as 'not recommended' due to a slow steering response, understeer on wet and dry roads and the lowest of all 20 runners. Of the pluses of the Kumho tire, experts mentioned the successful passing of tests for aquaplaning.
