French union concerned about the fate of the Goodyear plant

The sharp decline in production on the back of news about the closure of tire factories in Europe looks alarming.

The French union CGT has expressed concern over the fate of the Goodyear Dunlop tire plant in Montlusson, which, according to the organization, will significantly reduce its production of commercial tires next year - by 45%, from 450 to 230 thousand.

The Montlucon plant produces three types of products - motorcycle and commercial vehicle tires and rubber compounds that are supplied to other factories in the company. “We are concerned that the light truck tire industry will face a difficult situation,” says CGT.

La Montagne writes that it is reassuring for the 545 employees that Goodyear has guaranteed their employment in 2021. At the same time, it is not clear how events will develop further. “We have absolutely no idea what will happen next,” the CGT notes, adding that the union would like to know about critical issues at the enterprise at least three years before taking drastic measures.

Closed on March 20 due to the pandemic, the Montlusson plant has gradually resumed production since May 4, and although the demand for motorcycle tires is high, production volumes have not yet reached February levels.

Not long ago, Continental and Bridgestone announced the closure of tire factories in Europe, citing unprofitability, adding to the concerns of Goodyear workers. Employees of the closing factories, after the announcement of the decision of the management, went out to protest.
